The Hawai‘i County Department of Water Supply has upgraded its water restriction notice issued to South Kohala customers last week to an essential use only notice as crews work to repair wells.

The essential use restriction is needed to maintain water storage in the tanks, according to a news release from the Department of Water Supply. Affected areas include Kawaihae, Kawaihae Harbor, Hāpuna Beach Resort, Mauna Kea Beach Resort, Puakō and Mauna Lani Resort.

Customers are asked to use water only for essential health and safety needs, including:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Necessary personal hygiene
  • Necessary sanitation
  • Other essential household or health needs

Customers are asked to temporarily avoid non-essential water use, including:

  • Irrigation and lawn watering
  • Washing vehicles or boats
  • Filling swimming pools or spas
  • Pressure washing
  • Other unnecessary or high-volume water use

Reducing water use will help preserve available water supplies and maintain adequate storage for essential needs while DWS works to stabilize the water system. This “essential water use only” request will remain in effect until water system conditions improve.

The Department of Water Supply will notify customers when normal water use may resume.
