Updated at 6:08 p.m. Sept. 17, 2026.

National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu have issued another flood advisory for parts of the Big Island, this one in effect until 8:15 p.m. today because of expected minor flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams caused by excessive rainfall.

Doppler radar just after 5 p.m. indicated heavy rain over Hāmākua, North and South Hilo, Puna and Kaʻū — falling at half-inch to an inch per hour. Minor flooding was expected to begin shortly or already ongoing in those areas.

Some thunder also could be heard in Hilo.

Locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Hawaiian Paradise Park, Volcano, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Hawaiian Acres, Keaʻau, Orchidland, Pāpaʻikou and Pepe‘ekeo.

The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense also advises:

  • Flooding can be life-threatening. Residents in flood-prone areas should remain alert for flooding conditions.
  • Drive with caution. Be on alert for runoff, ponding water, debris and poor visibility.
  • Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.
  • If lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

A flood watch also remains in effect until Friday morning for the entire state.
