Flood advisory issued east, southeast portions of Big Island
A flood advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. today for eastern and southeastern portions of the Big Island because of flooding expected to be caused by forecast excessive rainfall.
National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu report that Doppler radar indicated at about 4 p.m. today that heavy rain was falling over parts of South Kona and Kaʻū.
Rain was falling at a rate of 0.5 to 1.5 inches per hour, with the heaviest near Kahuku Ranch.
Minor flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Additional showers are expected through this evening.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Ocean View, Nāʻālehu, Kāwā Flats, Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Park Kahuku Unit, Waiʻōhinu, Discovery Harbour and Miloliʻi.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
