Motorcyclist dies after reportedly crashing into utility pole in Hilo
A motorcyclist is dead following a collision in Hilo early Saturday morning.
Hawai‘i Island police responded to the crash at 1:46 a.m. in the area of the Kalanianaole Street and Kamehameha Avenue intersection. When they arrived on scene, they found a male unresponsive.
He was later pronounced dead at 1:54 a.m.
Through the course of their investigation, police determined the man was traveling west on Kalanianaole Street on a 2015 Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle when he lost control and veered off the roadway.
“The motorcycle struck a utility pole and the male operator was ejected from the motorcycle,” according to a news release from police on Sunday.
The motorcyclist’s identity is being withheld pending identification and notification of the next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
At this time, police believe that speed is a factor in the crash.
The East Hawai‘i Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation, which has been classified as a coroner’s inquest.

This is the 23rd traffic fatality of 2026, compared to 16 traffic fatalities this same time last year.
