UPDATE: Previously closed portion of Daniel K. Inouye Highway reopen

Update at 9:29 p.m. Sept. 5, 2026: Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Daniel K. Inouye Highway, between Old Saddle Road and Highway 190, is again open to all traffic following a traffic crash and subsequent police investigation.

Story originally posted and updated at 6:10 p.m. Sept. 5, 2026: Hawai‘i Police Department advises Big Island motorists to AVOID Daniel K. Inouye Highway, between Old Saddle Road and Highway 190, in South Kohala because of a traffic crash.

This section of the roadway is expected to remain closed several hours. Motorists are advised to use Old Saddle Road as a detour or take alternate routes.

A police investigation into the crash is underway.
