Woman’s remains found along shoreline in Waipio Valley; identity unknown
Authorities are investigating the death of an unidentified woman whose decomposed remains were found Sunday along the shoreline in Waipio Valley.
Hāmākua patrol officers responded to the Waipio Valley beach area shortly after midnight after receiving a report of a body at the shoreline, the Hawai‘i Police Department said.
Officers arrived on the scene at about 12:35 a.m. and found the remains of an apparent woman near the water’s edge. The woman was in an advanced state of decomposition, making it impossible for investigators to determine her approximate age or race, according to police.
An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. No suspicious injuries were found, and investigators do not suspect foul play.
The official cause and manner of death remain pending toxicology results.
Police are working to identify the woman through fingerprint database searches and DNA analysis.
Anyone with information that could help identify the woman or provide information about her death is asked to contact Detective Daniel Tam of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at 808-961-2380 or by email at Daniel.Tam@hawaiipolice.gov.
