Donated fuel available today, Friday for Hurricane Lala victims on Big Island still dependent on portable generators
Island Energy Services and Big Island Energy are joining forces to deliver donated fuel to communities on Hawaiʻi Island that are still without power and dependent on portable generators due to damage from Hurricane Lala.
- Today, Aug. 27: 2 to 5 p.m. at Kurtistown Samoan and English Seventh Day Adventist Church (17-588 – 17-594 Hawaiʻi Belt Road, Kurtistown)
- Friday, Aug. 28: from 1 pm to 4 pm at the former Kamei Gas Station Site (96-1155 Kamani Street, Pāhala)
Island Energy Services is donating the fuel, while Big Island Energy is providing the trucks, logistics and on-island support needed to transport it to affected communities.
Albert Chee, vice president of policy, government and public affairs at Island Energy Services, said the storm damage prompted the company to look for ways to assist affected residents.
Big Island Energy, which transports fuel throughout Hawaiʻi Island and operates a network of commercial fueling facilities, also wanted to help with the recovery efforts, said Sandy Baz, the company CEO.
The two companies coordinated with government and community partners to direct fuel to areas where it can provide the greatest benefit.
