Hawaiʻi police officers seek to engage with seniors during Kūpuna Watch meetings this week
Two Kupuna Watch meetings will provide opportunities for officers to engage with kūpuna in Waimea and Hōlualoa this week.
The Hawaiʻi Police Department is hosting two Kupuna Watch meetings this week in Hōlualoa and Waimea.
Facilitated by the Hawaiʻi Police Department and the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Parks and Recreation’s Elderly Activities Division, Kupuna Watch is an outreach program providing an opportunity for officers to engage with seniors directly during their regularly scheduled activities at various county facilities in West Hawaiʻi.
During these sessions, officers discuss crime and traffic trends, the importance of reporting elder abuse, and ways to identify and prevent financial and internet crimes. In addition to community policing officers, each monthly meeting features personnel from different areas of the police department to explain their specific areas of expertise.
The goal is to strengthen trust, promote safety, and build positive relationships through direct interaction.
The South Kohala community policing officers are holding a Kupuna Watch meeting from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Lily Yoshimatsu Senior Center, 67-1199 Māmalahoa Highway, in Waimea. For more information, contact the South Kohala Police Station at 808-887-3080.
Officers with the Kona Community Policing Section will hold their next monthly Kupuna Watch meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 28, at the Kona ʻImin Center, 76-5877 Old Government Road, in Hōlualoa.
