Free meal boxes coming weekly to Kaʻū children during Hurricane Lala recovery
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education announced it will begin weekly distributions of free meal boxes for children in Kaʻū as communities continue to recover from Hurricane Lala.
The program is expected to provide about 4,500 meals each week at three pickup locations in Pāhala, Nāʻālehu and Ocean View.
Each box will include five breakfasts and five lunches that meet school meal nutritional standards. The meals are free for children 18 and younger. Children must be present when the boxes are picked up.
Distribution will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning on Aug. 26 at the following locations:
- Kaʻū High & Pāhala Elementary School’s old school gym, 96-3150 Pikake St., Pāhala.
- Nāʻālehu Hongwanji Mission, 95-5695 Hawaiʻi Belt Road, Nāʻālehu.
A third site will operate on Thursdays, beginning on Aug. 27:
- St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 92-8606 Paradise Mauka Circle, Ocean View.
The state education department said the weekly distributions are intended to help students and families while regular school operations in the area remain disrupted.
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education added that food service employees will prepare, transport and distribute the meal boxes. The program will continue each week until further notice.
