45-year-old from Ocean View dies in head-on crash Saturday; 21-year-old in critical condition
A 45-year-old man from Ocean View died in a head-on collision early Saturday afternoon, according to Hawaiʻi Island police.
At 1:17 p.m., officers responded to the crash near the intersection of Aloha Boulevard and Lehua Lane in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates subdivision.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a gold 2021 Kia Seltos, operated by the 45-year-old man from Hawaiian Ocean View Estates, was traveling westbound on Aloha Boulevard when it crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with a silver 2000 Nissan Altima.
The Nissan was operated by a 21-year-old woman, also from Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
The 45-year-old man was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:35 p.m.
The 21-year-old woman was transported to the Kona Community Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
A coroner’s inquest investigation has been initiated. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of his family. The investigation is ongoing. It is unknown if Hurricane Lala played a role in this collision.
