Tropical Storm Lala prompts widespread closures at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park will begin closing areas of the park on Thursday as Tropical Storm Lala approaches Hawaiʻi Island, bringing heavy rain, flooding, and strong, potentially damaging winds.

Park officials said the closures are intended to protect visitors and staff as severe weather moves across the island.

The Mauna Loa summit, Red Hill, and Mauna Loa beyond Kīpukapuaulu will close by 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13.

Kīpukapuaulu is already closed because of hazardous trees.

By noon Friday, Aug. 14, the park will close the Welcome Center and Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association store, the Kahuku Unit, all trails and Nāhuku lava tube, tent camping at Nāmakanipaio Campground, and all backcountry sites, including coastal areas and Pepeiao.

Chain of Craters Road and the eastern section of Crater Rim Drive also will close by noon on Friday.

Kīlauea Military Camp, Volcano House, and the A-frame cabins at Nāmakanipaio will remain open only to registered lodging guests. Guests staying in those facilities are being instructed to shelter in place and avoid outdoor recreation while the storm threatens the area.

Park officials warned that additional closures could be imposed without advance notice as weather and road conditions change. Staff will monitor conditions and reopen areas when it is safe to do so.
