Registration open for 2026 Richardson’s Roughwater Swim in Hilo

Registration is underway for the 2026 Richardson’s Roughwater Swim, an annual 1-mile open water race scheduled for Sept. 12 at Richardson Ocean Park in Hilo.

The event is hosted by the Hawaiʻi County Department of Parks and Recreation. It is open to experienced swimmers capable of navigating open ocean conditions, including waves and currents.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. on race day. Participants may compete with or without fins.

Swimmers choosing to use a snorkel must register in the fins division. Wetsuits, flotation devices and hand paddles or gloves are not permitted.

Registration is available by mail only. Entry forms must be postmarked by Wednesday, Aug. 26, and are available at County swimming pools and on the county’s Aquatics webpage.

The entry fee is $35 per swimmer and may be paid by cash, check or money order made payable to the County Director of Finance.
