21 drivers arrested for DUI week of July 27 to Aug. 2 on Big Island roadways

Big Island police continue their crackdown on drivers who choose to drive under the influence, arresting 21 motorists for DUI during the week of July 27 to Aug. 2.

Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.

There have been a total of 466 DUI arrests made so far this year, a 14.02% decrease compared with the total 542 during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and found a total of 589 major crashes so far this year, a decrease of 4.54% compared with a total 617 major crashes recorded during the same time last year.

As of August 2, There had been 19 fatal crashes resulting in 21 fatalities as of Aug. 2, increases of 45.15% and 50%, respectively, compared with 13 fatal crashes resulting in 14 fatalities during the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
