Big Island police arrest 13 motorists for DUI week of July 20-26

Hawai’i Police Department continues its crackdown on motorists who choose to drive drunk or otherwise impaired on Big Island roadways, arresting 13 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of July 20-26.

Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; one was younger than 21 years old.

There have been 445 DUI arrests so far this year, a decrease of 15.56% compared with 527 during the same period last year.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crashes and found a total of 573 major crashes recorded so far this year, a 4.66% decrease from the 601 major crashes recording during the same time last year.

As of July 26, There had been 17 fatal crashes resulting in 19 fatalities as of July 26, increases of 30.77% and 35.71%, respectively, compared with 13 fatal crashes resulting in 14 fatalities during the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
