Top bartenders to compete during 4th annual Kuleana Rum Works Cocktail Classic

Fifteen top bartenders from throughout the Hawaiian Islands will pour their skills into a test of cocktail supremacy during the upcoming 2026 Kuleana Rum Works Cocktail Classic on the Big Island.

This year’s 4th annual drink duel is scheduled for 2 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 2 on the main stage at Kings’ Shops in Waikōloa.

“The Cocktail Classic is searching for the best bartender in Hawai‘i,” said event organizer and Kuleana Rum Works partner Art Deakins in a contest release. “We received more than 50 applications to compete this year, which is fantastic.”

Bartenders are challenged in 2 rounds of live competition.

Round 1 tests each bartender’s speed and precision. Contestants will then in Round 2 showcase their creativity with original cocktails featuring Kuleana Rum.

This year’s judges are:

• Dave Lewis, general manager of Kuleana Rum Works.
• Lisa Nordstrom, assistant director of food and beverage at Mauna Kea Resort.
• Brian Flynn, owner and operator of A-Bay’s.

They will evaluate each entry for cleanliness, technique, style, creativity, balance and flavor before naming the 2026 champion.

First-place winner will receive $1,200. Second-place finisher will receive $300.

“Our goal is to bring the cocktail community together through a friendly but competitive event and showcase what Hawai‘i bartenders can do,” Deakins said. “We want to create a space where bartenders can show their creativity and all-around professionalism while working with one of the world’s best spirits.”

Guests 21 years old and older can sample the competing cocktails (while supplies last), cheer for their favorite bartender and watch the competition unfold. A valid photo ID and event wristband are required for cocktail tastings.

Spectators of all ages are welcome in designated viewing areas.

Waikōloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa will also host a cash-only pop-up bar featuring frozen granitas, bento and musubi available for purchase throughout the afternoon. Access to the pop-up bar also is limited to guests 21 years old and older with a valid photo ID and event wristband.

“The Cocktail Classic gives residents and visitors a chance to experience Kings’ Shops in a different way,” said Kings’ Shops General Manager Lynn Rostau in the contest release.
