Beginning July 29, the speed limit on a section of Pūʻainakō Street Extension in Hilo was lowered to 45 mph to improve traffic safety.

Hawaiʻi County Department of Public Works said the new speed limit affects the portion of Highway 2000, between Komohana Street and a point about a half-mile east of Wilder Road. The speed limit had been 55 mph.

Plans are to permanently establish the reduced speed limit by seeking an amendment to county speed limit schedules. The new speed limit will be enforced under temporary authority acceptable under county codes until the amendment process is complete.

New speed limit signs were installed along the affected stretch of roadway.

Motorists are urged to watch for the updated signs, obey the new speed limit and use caution while traveling through the area.
