Future Hawaiian Homestead hub secures state funding for design, initial site preparation in Panaʻewa

The state has released funding for the design and preparation work of a Hawaiian homestead multipurpose community center coming to Panaʻewa in South Hilo.
The Keaukaha Panaʻewa Farmers Association has been developing the Panaʻewa Hub as a homestead-driven community center designed to provide a year-round gathering place for meetings, community events, and culturally grounded programs serving keiki to kūpuna.
According to the association, the Panaʻewa Hub represents a collaborative effort to expand opportunities for education, economic development, cultural connection, and community engagement within the Hawaiian homestead community.
On Wednesday, July 29, state Sen. Lorraine Inouye announced the release of $350,000 in capital improvement program grant-in-aid funds to support the design and initial site preparation work of the Panaʻewa Hub.
“Investing in community-driven projects like the Panaʻewa Hub helps create spaces where families can gather, learn, and build a stronger future together,” Inouye said. “This funding provides the foundation needed to move this important project forward and supports the vision of the Keaukaha Panaʻewa Farmers Association to create a place that serves generations of residents in South Hilo.”
The Panaʻewa Hub will support activities such as agricultural workshops, technology access, and workforce development and training.
