Head-on collision leaves 1 dead on Hawai‘i Island

A woman is dead following a two-vehicle crash in Volcano.

The collision occurred on Monday in Volcano near mile marker 22 on Highway 11. Hawai‘i Island police responded to reports of the incident just before 2:20 p.m.

When they arrived on scene, they found the woman, who was the driver of a tan 2007 Honda CR-V, unresponsive and ultimately pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m.

Through the course of their investigation, officers determined that the Honda CR-V was traveling north toward Hilo when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Volcano-bound silver 2017 Dodge Ram driven by a 60-year-old man from Volcano, according to a news release from Hawai‘i Island police on Tuesday.

The driver of the Dodge Ram did not suffer any apparent injuries from the collision.

At this time, police do not believe speed, alcohol, or drugs to be contributing factors in this investigation.

At this time, the woman’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of her next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact causes of her death.
