Update at 6:15 p.m. Monday, July 20: The Hawaiʻi Police Department has reopened Highway 11 in Puna near Volcano near mile marker 22.  

Original at 3:05 p.m. Monday, July 20: Highway 11 is closed in the Volcano area following a traffic accident Monday afternoon, according to the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency.

Authorities have added that the closure is in the Puna District near mile marker 22 and is expected to remain in effect for around four hours.

Officials have not released details on the number of vehicles involved or whether anyone was injured. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take an alternate route.
