Community members and island visitors alike are invited to celebrate the Fourth of July in true island style in Historic Kailua Village on the Big Island during a full day of patriotic festivities including the much-anticipated Independence Day Parade and Fireworks Extravaganza.

The Independence Day Parade begins at 6 p.m., winding through the heart of Kailua-Kona from Kona Gym to Coconut Grove Marketplace. It will showcase a colorful procession of floats, community groups, marching bands and keiki celebrating the spirit of freedom and unity.

Celebrate America250

This year’s theme “America The Beautiful” holds special significance as Historic Kailua Village joins communities throughout the nation in commemorating the United States Semi-quincentennial — a once-in-a-generation milestone honoring 250 years of American history, unity and progress.

Parade grand marshals

Tom Greenwell and the Greenwell ‘ohana will serve as the parade’s grand marshals.

As America celebrates 250 years of independence, the parade is honored to recognize a family whose story reflects the values that shaped the United States for generations — hard work, perseverance, innovation and a deep commitment to community.

The Greenwell family for five generations cultivated various crops including oranges for the sailing ships coming to the Big Island, ultimately growing coffee in Kealakekua starting in the 1870s.

Through changing times and across generations, they remained dedicated stewards of the ʻāina, helping build and sustain Kona’s most iconic agricultural crop — the world-famous Kona coffee.

The family’s commitment to farming, ʻohana and community help preserve Kona’s unique heritage while sharing the taste of Kona coffee with people around the globe.

Fireworks Extravaganza

Celebrations continue following the parade with a spectacular fireworks show over Kailua Bay beginning at about 8 p.m.

The fireworks will be visible from many oceanfront areas throughout the village; bring a beach chair or blanket and enjoy the show under the stars.

“This annual celebration brings our community together in the spirit of aloha and pride,” said Kailua Village Business Improvement District Executive Director Ross Wilson Jr. in an announcement about this year’s festivities. “The business improvement district is proud to be one of the hosts of an event that honors our nation’s history while highlighting the vibrant culture of our island traditions.”
