Hawaiian Electric monitors incoming storm, advises readiness for outages
Hawaiian Electric announced on Monday that it is preparing for a round of severe weather expected later this week, urging residents across the Hawaiian chain to be ready for potential power outages from strong winds, thunderstorms, and flash flooding.
The electric company said on April 6 that it is closely monitoring the forecast as unstable weather conditions develop, noting that recent storms have been unusually intense and could again disrupt electrical service in certain areas.
Hawaiian Electric officials urge customers to review emergency plans for their homes and businesses, stock necessary supplies, and stay informed as conditions change.
The electric company added that it has also activated storm response preparations, including employee training and coordination with federal, state, and local agencies, and cited ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure, such as vegetation management, equipment inspections, and maintenance of power lines, poles, and generating units.
They also warned that high winds and heavy rain could damage electrical systems, increasing the likelihood of outages.
Residents are advised to check emergency equipment such as flashlights, radios, and backup power sources, and to ensure extra batteries are available. Those who rely on electrically powered medical devices were urged to confirm backup plans and identify evacuation options if needed.
Officials also stressed safety precautions ahead of the storm, including keeping ladders and tools at least 10 feet away from power lines during home preparations and avoiding the use of portable generators indoors or in poorly ventilated areas.
In addition, the company cautioned against trimming trees immediately before the storm, noting that loose branches can become dangerous debris in high winds.
Residents who have already cut vegetation are urged to secure it to help prevent damage and power outages. For more information, click here.
