Hilo man reportedly stole keys from postal worker who was delivering mail
A 37-year-old man from Hilo reportedly stopped a postal worker during her route in South Kohala nearly a week ago, stealing her driver’s license and work keys.
Tristan De Witt Kiyan was charged with second-degree theft and unauthorized possession of confidential personal information following the incident that occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on March 20, according to Hawaiʻi Island police.
On Monday, Kiyan was granted supervised release, with an order to undergo a mental health evaluation.
According to a probable cause document filed in Kona District Court, the postal worker was delivering mail along Māmalahoa Highway when a white Toyota sedan began tailgating her and honking its horn.
The worker pulled over near the 64-0500 block of Māmalahoa Highway and said the driver of the truck pulled directly in front of her and reversed close to her vehicle.
The man, later identified as Kiyan, got out of the truck and approached the postal worker, stating to her that she had “violated” him.
Kiyan demanded the postal worker hand over her driver’s license, keys and cellphone, according to a news release from the Hawai‘i Police Department.
The postal worker complied, but refused to hand over her cellphone.
“Kiyan told the postal worker that she had now ‘violated’ him three times,” the release stated. “He then returned to his vehicle and drove away with the postal worker’s driver’s license and set of US Postal keys.”
Kiyan was found the following day in his vehicle in Hāmākua. The stolen postal keys attached were attached to a lanyard around his neck, according to the report.
He was arrested and taken into custody at that time with a bail set at $10,100.
A search warrant executed on Kiyan’s vehicle also yielded 23.14 grams of marijuana. He also was charged with third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug.
Kiyan appeared before District Court Judge Kimberly Tsuchiya on Monday where she granted the defense’s oral motion for a mental health evaluation. In the meantime, Kiyan was also granted supervised release and court proceedings were suspended until the completion of the examination.
A hearing on the results of the exam is scheduled for April 28.
This incident remains under investigation. Police ask that anyone with information, to contact Det. Jeremiah Hull at 808-326-4646 ext. 224, or at Jeremiah.Hull@hawaiipolice.gov.
