Sherry Bird appointed Deputy Chief of the Hawaiʻi Police Department
Assistant Police Chief Sherry Bird was confirmed as deputy chief by the Hawaiʻi County Police Commission during its monthly meeting on Friday in Kona, marking a historic first for the department.
Her confirmation makes Bird the first woman to serve as deputy chief in the Hawaiʻi Police Department’s 83-year history.

Following the meeting, Bird was sworn in during a private ceremony at the mayor’s office in Kona, officiated by an executive assistant to Kimo Alameda.
The ceremony, attended by family members and department leadership, allows Bird to assume her new duties immediately.
A public swearing-in ceremony is planned for a later date.
Bird previously made history in February 2025 when she became the department’s highest-ranking woman after being promoted to assistant chief of the Administrative Services Bureau. In that role, she oversaw multiple divisions, including administrative and technical services, specialized response units, and support sections.
During her 28-year career, Bird has held a range of leadership and operational roles across Hawaiʻi Island.
She served as the major of the Area II Field Operations Bureau in West Hawaiʻi and led the Administrative Services Division. Her experience also includes assignments in criminal investigations, vice, intelligence, and patrol operations in districts such as North Kohala, South Kohala, and Kona.

Mayor Alameda praised Bird’s appointment, citing her long record of service and leadership.
“Deputy Chief Bird’s appointment reflects her dedication, professionalism, and decades of service to our island,” he said in a statement.
Police Chief Reed K. Mahuna said Bird brings extensive experience in both administrative and field operations.
“This is a historic day for our department,” Mahuna said, adding that he hopes her achievement will encourage more women to pursue careers in law enforcement and leadership within the department.
