13 motorists arrested for DUI week of Feb. 2-8 on Big Island roadways
Hawai’i Police Department continues to crack down on people who choose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while they are intoxicated.
Police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of Feb. 2-8 on Big Island roadways. Five of those drivers were involved in traffic crashes; three of them, or 23%, nearly a quarter, were younger than 21 years old.
Data show there have been a total of 76 DUI arrests made so far this year, however, which is nearly the same percentage of a decrease, 22.45%, compared with the 98 already made by this time a year ago.
Kona reported the most DUI arrests during the past week with 6; however, with another 4 made in Hilo the same time, the districts are tied at 25 so far for the year.
Puna isn’t too far behind with 19 DUI arrests so far this year total.

Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services staff reviewed all updated crash numbers, discovering a total of 119 major crashes have been recorded so far this year, a 21.43% spike compared with the 98 recorded by this time last year.
Unfortunately, the Big Island has seen 4 fatal traffic crashes and 4 fatalities on its roadways so far throughout the first couple of months of 2026, a 20% decrease on both stats compared to the 5 fatal crashes and 5 fatalities by this time in 2025.
Police report DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
