The Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi is hosting its first Big Island blood drive this year at a new partner location, the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa, for three days this week.

The blood drive comes at a time when there is an urgent need for blood, specifically O-negative blood, according to the blood bank.

Nationally, only about 3% of eligible donors give blood, and the Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi hopes to improve this statistic for the state. Due to Hawaiʻi’s unique island geography, maintaining a stable blood supply is even more critical.

The drive will be held in the Keauhou Ballroom at the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa, 78-128 Ehukai St., for three days next week. Donors can make an appointment or walk in from:

  • 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10
  • 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11
  • 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12

The Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi invites anyone who can, especially first-time donors in the West Hawaiʻi community, to come out and donate.

Blood drives are held in Kona and Hilo three times a year to ensure that residents have the opportunity to donate. The next drive in West Hawaiʻi will be in June.
