Minor coastal flooding is expected along the shores of the Big Island through Monday, Feb. 2, as a large surf combined with higher than forecast water levels, according to officials with the National Weather Service.

A coastal flooding statement has been issued with isolated flooding anticipated at and around daily peak tides, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

Forecasters said beaches that typically remain dry could experience flooding, along with minor coastal erosion. Vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, including roads, docks, boat ramps and other coastal infrastructure, are most at risk.

Saltwater inundation may affect shoreline roadways and access points, officials said.

Authorities urged the public to avoid driving through flooded roads. Motorists who must travel through saltwater are advised to rinse their vehicles with fresh water afterward to prevent corrosion.

Residents and boat owners are encouraged to move vehicles, electronics, and other valuables to higher ground and to monitor vessels. Officials also advised securing canoes and other watercraft stored on beaches and using caution around boat ramps where overwash may occur.
