High bacteria count prompts retesting at Kona beach

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health is retesting water quality at Kahaluu Beach Park after elevated bacteria levels were detected during routine monitoring, officials said.

A recent sample showed enterococci bacteria levels of 2,005 per 100 milliliters, exceeding the state’s acceptable threshold for recreational waters. Health officials said they are uncertain whether the sample accurately reflects overall conditions at the beach.

The department noted that Kahaluu Beach Park has historically met water quality standards and that no known source of fecal contamination has been identified. As a result, a follow-up sample has been collected to verify the initial findings.

The Department of Health said it will update the public once retesting results are available and advised beachgoers to remain informed as testing continues.
