The county asks the public to kōkua, plan ahead and refrain from littering outside transfer station gates while the facilities are closed.

Tree-cycling

Residential customers are encouraged to tree-cycle their Christmas and other holiday trees as well as kadomatsu decorations at the following county recycling and transfer stations and times:

  • 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. during regular green waste collection days at the facilities in Kealakehe (Kailua-Kona), Ke‘ei, Kea‘au, Pāhoa, Volcano and Waimea.
  • 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at East Hawai‘i Organics Facility in Hilo. Keep in mind the facility is closed from noon to 12:30 p.m. daily.
  • 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at West Hawai‘i Organics Facility in Puʻu Anahulu. Remember: the west side facility is also closed from noon to 12:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

The tree-cycling service will be available to the public from Dec. 28 through Jan. 15, 2026, except for the annual Jan. 1, 2026, closure of solid waste facilities.

Flocked trees, artificial trees or trees with decorations are not recyclable and can be disposed of in the regular trash chutes — do not drop them off at tree-cycling sites.
