Fire breaks out at affordable housing complex on Hawai‘i Island

Residents at an apartment complex in Pepe‘ekeo were evacuated Monday night after a fire broke out in one of the units.

Hawai‘i Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said firefighters were called to Kauhale Olu, located on Kumula Street at 10:36 p.m. When crews arrived on scene, first responders reported a large fire that was growing.

Once the fire started in one unit, the chief said, all units had to be evacuated. There is no record of injuries at this time.

The blaze was under control by 11:08 p.m. and the last unit left the complex at 1:35 a.m.
