Vulcans women’s cross-country posts best PacWest Championships finish in 15 years
University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women’s cross-country had its best Pacific West Conference Championships finish in 15 years with a No. 7 placement at the 6K event Oct. 25 at Hawaiʻi Country Club in Waipahu, Oʻahu.
Sequoia Gonzales and Kathleen Raab finished inside the top 14 to earn All-PacWest Second Team honors at No. 12 (22:19.7) and No. 14 (22:23.7), respectively.
“This was the best team performance of the year,” said second-year head coach Alan Ryan in a release about the women’s stellar performance. “We’ve prepared all season for this race and they all came through with a great team placement. Two All-Conference performances is spectacular. The ladies stepped up!”
The Vulcans finished with 165 points, with an average time of 23:31.
It was the highest finish at the conference meet since finishing No. 6 in the 2010 PacWest Championships on the North Shore of Oʻahu.
University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo has three conference championships: 1995, 2006 and 2007.
It was 2010 the last time the Vulcans earned All-PacWest Team honors, with the duo of Kirsta Andrew (No. 10) and Kaylene Peric (No. 12) landing on the Second Team.
Biola claimed its fourth consecutive PacWest Championship, with Bethany Mapes claiming the individual crown by crossing the finish line in a time of 21:40.6.
