Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation announces the reduction of the speed limit on Kuakini Highway (Highway 11) between mile markers 113.6 and 117.1 in Kona.

The limit will decrease to 45 mph from its current 55 mph for both directions between Old Māmalahoa Highway and Kamehameha III Road.

Speed limit signs will be changed within 30 days from now, and the new speed limit will be in effect once all signs are installed.

State transportation officials actively manage speed to make Hawaiʻi roads safer using speed limit signs, right-sizing roadways and installing roundabouts and raised pedestrian crosswalks, where appropriate.

Implementing speed management and traffic-calming devices can reduce serious traffic injuries and fatalities while ensuring an efficient system.

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is reducing the speed to provide a manageable, safe and consistent speed limit for that portion of the highway, which contains community and keiki gathering places such as Harold H. Higashihara Park and Kamakana Playground, as well as a church and scenic point.

Visit the state Transportation Department website for additional information.
