An overnight rain gave a muggy, overcast start to this year’s Women’s Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona on Saturday.

Approximately 1,600 triathletes competing from around the world took to the grueling 140.6-mile course. Waters in Kailua Bay were slightly choppy, highlighted pink as the sun rose over Hualālai.

Pros Lucy Charles-Barclay of Great Britain and American Taylor Knibb were neck and neck throughout the race, with the women leapfrogging over each other during the 112-mile bike course and into the 26.2-mile run. However, Charles-Barclay and Knibb tapped out of the race in the final leg, paving the way for Norway’s Solveig Løvseth to capture the top podium spot.
