Update: Flood Advisory for Kona has been canceled
Update 6:51 p.m. Sept. 1: The Flood Advisory for Kona Districts has been called off.
The radar indicates that the heavy rain has diminished, according to officials with the National Weather Service.
Update 6:00 p.m. Sept.1: The Flood Advisory for both North and South Kona Districts has been extended until 8:15 p.m.
Original Post: A flood advisory is in effect for the North and South Kona Districts of the Big Island until 6:15 p.m. this evening on Labor Day.
Rain is falling at a rate of up to 1 inch per hour, and additional locally heavy showers are expected through the afternoon, according to officials with the National Weather Service.
Additional areas likely to experience flooding include Captain Cook, Kahaluu-Keauhou, Kainaliu, Honalo, Kealakekua, Holualoa, Honaunau, Kalaoa, and Kona International Airport.
Minor flooding on roads and in poor drainage areas and streams can be expected.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches, and low-lying areas prone to flooding.
