Police seek leads regarding an unsolved murder from nearly four years ago

Hawaiʻi Island police detectives are renewing their request for information about an unsolved July 2021 murder in Puna.

On July 31, 2021, the body of 76-year-old Michael Rosenbaum was discovered at MacKenzie State Recreation Area in Puna.

Rosenbaum was reported missing on July 24, 2021, and was last seen alive on July 22, 2021, in Pāhoa. He lived in the area and often caught the bus or walked from his home to nearby businesses.

His body was found by a local fisherman on the cliffs below the beach park. An autopsy later concluded that Rosenbaum died from a gunshot wound.

The Area I Criminal Investigation Section is continuing the investigation, classified as second-degree murder.

Police ask anyone with information about this case to call the police department’s nonemergency number at 808-935-3311.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 808-961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. Crime Stoppers does not record calls or subscribe to caller ID. All information is kept confidential.
