UPDATE: Big Island woman now faces charges connected to crash that badly injured her pedestrian boyfriend

Update at 8:04 p.m. June 20, 2025: Hawai‘i Island police have charged a 22-year-old Big Island woman with multiple offenses, including attempted murder, relating to a traffic crash the night of June 17 in Ocean View that badly injured her 24-year-old pedestrian boyfriend.

Alaina Kainoa-Aukai

Alaina Kainoa-Aukai of Ocean View was charged June 19 with:

  • Second-degree attempted murder.
  • Second-degree assault.
  • First-degree negligent injury.
  • Operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
  • First-degree assault against a law enforcement officer.

Kainoa-Aukai’s total bail was set at $1.02 million and her initial court appearance was today (June 20) in Kona District Court.

Online court records show that the court ordered her bail be maintained at $1 million and she remains in custody. Kainoa-Aukai’s next court appearance will be at 8:30 a.m. June 24 in Kona District Court for a preliminary hearing.

Her 24-year-old boyfriend sustained substantial injuries is the crash — which further investigation revealed happened after the couple were allegedly involved in a domestic dispute — and was transported by medical personnel to Kona Community Hospital for treatment.

Kainoa-Aukai — who police say displayed signs of impairment — became combative with responding law enforcement and kicked an officer multiple times in the leg prior upon being taken into custody and being placed into a police transport vehicle the night of the crash.

Original story posted at 3 a.m. June 20, 2025: A 22-year-old Big Island woman was arrested the night of June 17 in connection with an incident during which her possible 24-year-old pedestrian Big Island boyfriend was badly injured in a traffic crash. She also allegedly kicked an officer while being arrested.

Hawai‘i Police Department reports that Alaina Kainoa-Aukai of Ocean View was arrested for:

  • First-degree negligent injury.
  • Operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
  • First-degree assault against a law enforcement officer.

Kainoa-Aukai is being detained at the Kona Police Station pending additional investigation by Hawai‘i Police Department Area II Juvenile Aid Section detectives.

Ka‘ū patrol officers responded at 9:10 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic crash in the area of Princess Kaiulani Boulevard and Lotus Blossom Lane of Ocean View and contacted Kainoa-Aukai, who identified herself as the vehicle’s driver and was displaying signs of impairment.

The pedestrian, an Ocean View man and possible boyfriend of Kainoa-Aukai, sustained substantial bodily injury in the crash and was transported by medical personnel to Kona Community Hospital in Kailua-Kona for treatment.

Additional investigation revealed the incident might have been associated with domestic violence.

Kainoa-Aukai became combative while being taken into custody and also allegedly kicked an officer multiple times in the leg prior to being placed into a police transport vehicle.
