Keiki in 3rd through 8th grade will have camp at Panaʻewa Park Gym and high schoolers will be in the on-campus Vulcan Gymnasium at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo from Monday, July 21 through Thursday, July 24.

Registration is open, but there are 220 slots available on a first-come, first-served basis. The four-day camp costs $130 per participant.

The summer basketball camp will be instructed by former and current Vulcans players and basketball coaches, including: the men’s head coach Kaniela Aiona, women’s head coach David Kaneshiro and men’s assistant coach Steve Kinder.

While the athletes will practice and run drills every day, the camp will also include games, contests and guest speakers along with lunch, a t-shirt, basketball and a camp photo.

“As coaches, this is one of our favorite weeks of the year. We get to have a blast teaching fundamentals and values of basketball to our keiki,” Aiona said. “This is such a unique camp for many reasons — especially since we are so fortunate to have great support from community members who dedicate their time and energy to the camp each year.”

As a pioneer of basketball in Hawai’i, late Hall of Fame coach Jimmy Yagi led camps and clinics around the world to help generations of aspiring basketball players enhance their skill sets to achieve their athletic goals.

Yagi spent 12 seasons as head coach of the Vulcans Men’s Basketball team, compiling a record of 252-126 in the late 1970s through the early 1980s.

“Each summer we have the privilege of carrying on the Vulcan Camp tradition started by Coach Yagi many decades ago,” Aiona said.

Before registering for camp, parents and guardians are encouraged to read through the camp brochure, which includes all the frequently asked questions. Advanced registration is required and all forms must be completed before being mailed or hand-delivered accompanied with full payment.
