$3M released for improvements at Wailoa River State Recreation Area in Hilo
Big Island state Sen. Lorraine Inouye, who represents Hilo, Paukaʻa, Pāpaʻikou and Pepeʻekeo, recently announced the release of $3 million in state capital improvement funds for improvements at Wailoa River State Recreation Area in Hilo.
The longtime lawmaker said in announcing the funding release that the investment will allow for the continued and much-needed renovations to the recreation area’s buildings and construction of additional walkways throughout the park that surrounds Waiakea Pond and the Wailoa River along Hilo Bayfront on the east side of town.
“These improvements will enhance the facilities, beautify the grounds and preserve the recreation area so it continues to be a welcoming and vibrant space for both the Hilo community and our visitors,” Inouye said in her announcement.
She added that the Capital Improvement Program project highlights the state’s commitment to preserving and enhancing public spaces.
As a cultural landmark and popular gathering place, Wailoa River State Recreation Area will benefit from upgrades that will help keep it safe, accessible and vibrant for generations to come.
“I thank Gov. Josh Green for committing these funds to such an important project,” said Inouye.
