After owning and growing his business into a multi-use space for residents and visitors, Ira Ono has put Volcano Garden Arts on the market for the next creative visionary.

Ono became interested in the 2.7-acre property located at the end of Old Volcano Road when he rented the space with four other artists more than 20 years ago. When the original owners put the property on the market, he decided to jump at the opportunity knowing he would be a good caretaker.

“After 20 years, I still enjoy being the steward here; I absolutely love what I do,” Ono said. “But now it’s looking good. The trees are tall, and I just feel I’m ready to go on to the next act.”

Over the past two decades, Ono has built Volcano Garden Arts into a gathering place with a curated gallery featuring local art, a private residence and Café Ono, an established café with a fully equipped, certified kitchen and popular recipes.

Ono has had the property for sale for about a year, with a listing price of $1,495,000. He said he is taking his time finding the right buyer who will continue the vision while also making it their own.

“I want this space to continue on with purpose,” Ono said. “There have been such great people that have worked with me and been part of this for years. Volcano Village is quite cultural, and I believe Volcano Garden Arts will continue to provide a service for the community.”

The art gallery has been curated from 100 local artists from around the state and Ono is hoping they can keep their work in the gallery long term.

“This isn’t just another real estate listing,” said Mishi Clauberg, a realtor with KW Big Island. “It’s an invitation to carry forward a legacy — and build a heart-centered life where your work, art, and community all flourish under one roof.

The sale also includes five websites:

Ono may be retiring but he plans to continue to be part of the vibrant, growing arts scene of Volcano Village.

“The community is very vibrant and cultural, and there are new people coming in, bringing with them knowledge, information and more culture,” Ono said. “I am immersed in the arts community and want to continue to be part of it. I feel good about the direction Volcano Village is going.”

To acquire the businesses and property, prospective buyers will need to show proof of funds prior to financial information being disclosed.
