71-year-old Kona man dies from injuries after rear-ending bus while cycling

A 71-year-old Kailua-Kona man has died, succumbing to injuries he received when he rear-endend a bus while cycling April 9 on Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway (Highway 19) in North Kona.

Franz Albert-Ludwig Weber was transported to Kona Community Hospital for initial treatment following the crash near the 94.5-mile marker and later transported to The Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, where he was pronounced dead at 9:34 a.m. April 17.

Hawai‘i Island police responding to the reported crash at 9:08 a.m. April 9 and determined Weber was riding a black Trek bicycle heading south, or Kona bound, when he rear-ended a green 2015 Motor Coach Industries tour bus that was stopped on the shoulder of the highway.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation into the incident.

This is the 11th traffic fatality this year on Big Island roadways compared to 15 by this time last year.
