DUI arrests up 4% from last year already as of week ending April 6

DUI arrests were highest in the Kona District from March 31 to April 6.

Hawai‘i Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant islandwide, with 12 people arrested in Kona.

Seven of the 20 drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One of the drivers was under the age of 21.

Data from Hawai‘i Island police for the week of March 31 to April 6.

So far this year, there have been 260 DUI arrests compared with 250 during the same period last year, an increase of 4%.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 265 major crashes so far this year, compared with 275 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 3.6%.

To date, there have been nine fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, compared with 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 14 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 25% for fatal crashes and 28.6% for fatalities.

So far in 2025, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
