Nāhuku lava tube comfort station upgrades complete
Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is flush with excitement as upgrades to the Nāhuku lava tube comfort station are complete.

Originally constructed by local members of the Civilian Conservation Corps, its “eye-catching” windows and lava rock masonry harken back to 1934. Improvements included the building be re-roofed, installing new metal siding and repairing cracked windows and mortar.
The updated historic comfort station also features new sinks, hand dryers, flushing toilets, accessible stalls and fresh paint, plus more.
It’s a fresh and welcome addition to the park’s restroom facilities.
Where else can you go — especially now that the Kīlauea Visitor Center and its restrooms are zipped up for renovations — before you head out into the park?
Portable toilets are available:
- Behind the Welcome Center at Kīlauea Military Camp.
- At the nearby ballfield parking lot.
- Near Kīlauea Visitor Center and Volcano Art Center Gallery.
- At Uēkahuna.
Vault toilets can be found at:
- Kīlauea Overlook.
- Kīlauea Iki Overlook.
- Devastation Trail.
- Maunaulu.
- Hilina Pali Overlook.
- Kulanaokuaiki.
- End of Chain of Craters Road.
- Kīpukapuaulu day use area.
- Kahuku Unit.
The Nāhuku restroom improvement project was ahead of schedule.
Park officials expected it to be finished by the end of April. It was completed before the end of March.
