The National Park Service reports that tephra is being carried aloft and falling onto Highway 11 (Hawaii Belt Road) in the Ka`u District between the 35 and 37 mile markers.

Recent lava fountaining at the summit of Kīlauea produced large frothy clasts that landed on the western caldera rim in addition to many smaller clasts that produced a thick carpet of new tephra. (Photo Courtesy: U.S. Geological Survey/M. Patrick)

Tephra defines all pieces of fragments of rock and other material ejected into the air by an erupting volcano. Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense Agency advises drivers do not stop, do not get out of the vehicle and keep all windows rolled up.

There are no road closures at this time, however, road closures could occur without notice.
