Another large northwest swell is rapidly building from northwest to southeast down the island chain this morning and will peak late this morning through the afternoon, then gradually decline tonight through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu.

In response, forecasters issued a new high surf advisory for the majority of the Big Island’s west coast, from North Kohala through South Kona, until 6 a.m. Saturday.

Surf of 7 to 10 feet is expected along west shores of the island, causing strong breaking waves and strong currents that will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous.

Members of the public who plan to be along shorelines in the advisory areas are urged to heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
