Surf is rapidly building down the island chain today with the arrival of a large northwest swell, which is expected to peak later today and then steadily decline tonight through Thursday morning.

In response, the National Weather Service forecast office in Honolulu issued a high surf advisory until 6 a.m. Thursday for the west coast of the Big Island, from from ʻUpolu Point in North Kohala to South Point in Kaʻū, as surf of 7 to 10 feet is expected along west shores.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents in the advisory areas will make swimming and other ocean activities dangerous.

“Shore break and dangerous currents could cause injury or death,” said Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense in a morning message Wednesday. “Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice given by ocean safety officials and exercise caution when entering the water.”

National Weather Service forecasters remind the public: When in doubt, don’t go out.
