24 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Feb. 3-9 on Big Island
The crackdown on motorists who drive while intoxicated on Big Island roadways continues.
Police the week of Feb. 3-9 arrested 24 motorists who were behind the wheel and under the influence, with 7 of the drivers involved in traffic crashes and 4 of them younger than 21 years old.
Hawai‘i Police Department reported a total of 106 DUI arrests so far this year by the end of last week. That is a 4.5% decrease from 2024; however, it’s just 5 less than the 111 DUI arrests during the same time period last year.
An updated review of traffic crashes on the island by the Traffic Services Section found there have been 97 major crashes so far this year.
That represents an 8.5% decrease from last year, but there have been only 9 fewer major crashes this year than the 106 that happened during the same time frame in 2024.
Five fatal crashes resulting in 5 fatalities also have happened so far this year on the Big Island, the same number as in 2024 within the same time period.
There have been no non-traffic fatalities, those that happen elsewhere than a public highway, in 2025.
Hawai‘i Police Department will continue its DUI roadblocks and patrols islandwide.
