Road paving will close portions of Makaʻala Street in Hilo today and tomorrow

The County of Hawaiʻi Department of Public Works will continue road paving on Makaʻala Street near the intersection of Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo Thursday and Friday.

The road work will cause the traffic to switch from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days, weather permitting.

On Thursday, there will be no turns allowed onto Makaʻala from Kanoelehua, and traffic from E. Makaʻala Street will have to turn right or left onto the highway.

On Friday, the traffic pattern changes and the turn lanes will be open. However, drivers will not be able to access Makaʻala Street near the Kanoelehua intersection and will have to take a different route to the highway.

Paving will pause for the holiday season starting Monday, Dec. 23, and resume on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Road paving in the industrial area began in November, and includes resurfacing on Holomua, Poʻokela, Makaʻala and Wiwoʻole streets. The road project will be put on pause for the holidays beginning Monday, Dec. 23 and is set to resume on Thursday, Jan. 2.
