University of Hawai‘i at Hilo celebrates 2024 fall commencement this weekend
Kanaka ʻōiwi (Native Hawaiian) Puʻuwai Tollefson-Kelly is deeply rooted in values that honor her culture and foster meaningful connections.
The communication major at University of Hawai’i at Hilo — with a subject certificate in educational studies — has worked at Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center, allowing her to live these values and build pilina (relationships) through authentic interactions.
Tollefson-Kelly’s passion for education and service will be in the spotlight Saturday as she addresses her fellow students, the faculty, administrators and others in attendance at Vulcan Gymnasium in Hilo and watching live online during University of Hawai’i at Hilo’s 2024 fall commencement.
The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. and limited to invited guests only; however, can be viewed via YouTube.
Tollefson-Kelly is one of nearly 220 students from the College of Arts and Sciences; Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikolani College of Hawaiian Language; College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management; College of Natural and Health Sciences; College of Business and Economics; and the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy who will be conferred degrees.
She served as a peer mentor at Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center, including supporting the IS150 kuleana and community courses since fall 2022. Tollefson-Kelly also participated in numerous community service initiatives on and off campus.
Her dedication earned her the University of Hawai’i at Hilo overall group Ka Lama Kū Leadership Award and the university’s Department of Communication Academic Excellence Award.
Tollefson-Kelly looks forward to combining her skills and values to make a lasting impact on her community.
She plans to pursue a master of arts degree in teaching at University of Hawai’i at Hilo following graduation, with a goal of becoming an educator dedicated to uplifting her kaiāulu (community).
