Charles ‘Sparky’ Kawamoto Swim Stadium in Hilo reopens
Charles “Sparky” Kawamoto Swim Stadium in Hilo reopened Dec. 14 a full 2 months after it was closed for scheduled repairs that became more than expected.
The facility closed Oct. 14 for planned repairs to the pool pump’s bearings and mechanical seal. However, it was discovered that additional repairs were necessary after the pump was removed and disassembled, necessitating a longer closure.
“Our administration is committed to improving and maintaining access to quality recreation,” said Hawai’i County Mayor Kimo Alameda. “That’s why from Day 1, we asked for a completion date of these repairs, and we are excited to join the community in celebrating the pool’s reopening.”
Jon Hayashida, swim coach for the Hilo Aquatic Club, praised the project’s completion.
“Mayor Kimo is already living up to his promise of working and communicating with our community,” said Hayashida. “We are so happy that our youth swimmers can return to the pool.”
The Hawai’i County Department of Parks and Recreation also conducted additional maintenance while the facility was shuttered, including replacement of failed lamps in the pool and bleacher areas.
