Update: Police name motorcyclist killed in Hilo crash

Update at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 1: Big Island police on Tuesday identified the motorcyclist killed in a two-vehicle collision Sunday in Hilo as 20-year-old Isaac Dakujaku of Hilo.

The Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate the crash as a negligent homicide. 

Original post from 7:29 a.m. Sept. 30: Hawai‘i Island police have launched a negligent homicide investigation after a motorcyclist was killed following a two-vehicle collision in Hilo on Sunday evening.

At 9:35 p.m. on Sept. 29, police responded to the reported traffic collision at the intersection of ʻĀinaloa Drive and Komohana Street.

Upon arrival, police learned a 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle traveling southwest on ʻĀinaloa Drive collided with a 2015 Nissan sedan that was turning left onto Komohana Street as it was traveling northeast on ʻĀinaloa Drive.

The driver of the 2019 Kawasaki motorcycle was unresponsive at the scene.

He was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:22 p.m.

The man has not been positively identified. An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

A 23-year-old woman from Hilo who was riding in the Nissan sedan sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

The 37-year-old Hilo man who was driving the Nissan and a juvenile seated in the rear seat of the vehicle were uninjured.

At this time, police think speed was a factor in the collision. The victim was wearing a helmet.

This is the twenty-third traffic fatality of 2024 compared to 14 traffic fatalities this time last year.
