Pūʻainakō Street repaving project in Hilo extended through November
The Pūʻainakō Street repaving project in Hilo has been extended through November as the Hawai’i Department of Transportation re-evaluates the final configuration of the roadway to ensure the pedestrian path along the mauka (mountain facing) side of the street meets safety standards.
The project was previously estimated to be substantially completed by the end of this month.
Shoulder work, including clearing and preparing the area and asphalt repaving, is expected to begin in about 2 weeks after finishing manhole adjustments.
There will be a single lane closure from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays on Pūʻainakō Street to accommodate the project.
Special duty police officers will be on-site to direct traffic during the alternating lane closure.
Night work is not possible because of the beginning of seabird fledgling season, which is from Sept. 15 to Dec. 15.
Remaining work on Pūʻainakō Street includes smoothing of driveway transitions as well as installation of traffic signal backplates, loop detectors and striping.
Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of closure information.
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution and follow all traffic control signs through the work zone area.
All work is weather permitting. The final completion date is subject to change per these conditions.
